About 30 Min with Mo

30 Minutes with Mo is a series of essays that I’ve written in response to writing prompts. The idea is to write for 30 minutes non-stop. To let the writing flow and let come what will and publish it without editing or censorship.Today’s prompt is ‘Call on your muses before beginning to write. Ask them for help and trust that they are there. How does it feel?’

RECORDED READING of the ‘The Stars That I See’.

About the Stars Essay

Reflections on Stars I wrote this essay early one morning after a day of traveling. Fatigued, my train of thought was halting and uninspired. These ’30 minutes with Mo’ essays are supposed to be 30 minutes stream of consciousness, but today I spent more time resting with my eyes closed than actually writing or thinking about what to write. Still I feel satisfied to have articulated a pearl of insight within this little essay.

Take this and all ’30 Minutes with Yogi Mo’ writings for what they are – candid, stream of consciousness writings that I just feel like sharing. – Monique

The Stars I See

How do you feel when you look at the stars?

Peaceful… calm… quiet … still.

In Flagstaff the stars shine bright partly because of our high altitude and clear skies. Partly because of our ‘dark skies’ law, which prohibits bright night lights.

There are many things I dislike about Flagstaff, but the stars and night skies in Flagstaff are not on that list. We are blessed with a natural wonder every evening when the sun sets in Flagstaff Arizona.

Sometimes the stars appear absolutely still… sometimes they look to me like shiny pin points wobbling in a bowl of thick Jello. And sometimes they shoot through the sky in a burst of energy.

Shooting stars are common here… does that mean that all my dreams will come true?

We have a ‘star gazing deck’ on the front of the house. The architect, who built this house as his personal home told me that is why the deck has no roof.  Right here, in this house I’ve lived for four years is my very own star gazing deck… and I’ve never used it.

I keep saying that one night I will sleep out on the deck so that I can fall asleep gazing at the stars… but it never happens. OK… that’s it. Before we go to Minneapolis for the summer I’m going to pull my sofa cushions out on the deck and enjoy the little piece of heaven available from my star gazing deck.

Probably the place I most often look at the stars is when I’m in the hot tub in my backyard.  It’s really beautiful… dark skies… glowing ponderosa pines… all set amid twinkling stars. There are no words… stars go better with silence.

Why do we like stars? What is the attraction?

Is it because they are so distant …. Pinpoints of mysterious beauty that are part of our daily existence, yet unreachable… unattainable… beyond

Is it because they exist among the borders of our lives…. Providing clear boundaries while hinting at what must lie beyond these glowing sentinels…

Is it because they represent the mystery of life itself…. What we see when we look at a star is only a ghostly apparition of a former entity…. What we see is there even once its material body has vanished.

Does this parallel the illusions that permeate other aspects of our lives? Somehow, when looking at stars do we become aware not of our mortality… but of the transcendent nature of life itself? Of the universe? Of perception? Do we begin to understand that our actions and existence are not bound by time and space?

Yes… when I look at stars I feel calm and peaceful because in the stars I see my own immortality. In these apparitional sentinels I see that I am more than this body… these eyes… this hair… More than these thoughts… More than I or anyone else can perceive…

I am connected to all that is… I exist throughout the time space continuum. I am a mystery and like the stars… this body that I house is a mysterious sentinel signifying the boundaries of a much greater existence.
